From the National Dictionary of French Canadians
Massé Joseph Gravelle
Immigrant to Canada in 1641
Arrived with M. de Maisonneuve
And pioneered the coast of the Beaupré in Quebec

Massé Joseph Gravel, the Gravel Norman ancestor, emigrated from France to Canada in 1641 with a group of people who would go on to found Ville Marie. In the spring of 1642, on May 18, the group established the town of Montréal. Massé Joseph Gravel preferred to settle on the coast of Beaupré at Chateau Richer on land that stayed in the family up to modern times.

In addition to cultivating the soil, he worked in the trades in Québec. He additionally contracted the masonry and carpentry for the Chateau St. Louis in Québec and the church in that town.

In the 1667 census, Massé Joseph Gravel had 52 acres of farmland and 38 farm animals in the stable; quite prosperous for that period of time in the colony.

Six sons of Massé Joseph Gravel married and two daughters became Ursuline Sisters in Québec. One became the founder of a religious Monastery in Three Rivers.

Seguin Gravel, son of Jean Gravel lived in France in 1301. He was the Seigneur of the fief lands currently known as the parishes of Veroz and Oroux.
